ok, bought a 1098S in Washington and now it's time to register here in CA.

The DMV web site says that they won't even accept an application for registration if the bike is new (new is defined by the bike having less than 7500 miles on it).

http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/brochures/fast_facts/ffvr29.htm

Does anyone have experience registering an out-of-state bike in California? If so, please share with me what you had to do to get the bike registered in California.

Thanks in advance!

Ron,

If you re-read it, that restriction only applies to 49-State vehicles. If the 1098 is 50-State certified—and I’m 99.9% sure it is—you have no worries. Just show up at the DMV with the paperwork and a pile of money to pay the sales and other taxes, and someone there should check the bike’s sticker to verify it is Cali-legal. Then you’re good-to-go.

I moved here with a new Corvette two years ago and had to tag it. I would recommend you do one of two things: 1. Take advantage of Cali’s DMV reservation option—it will save you HOURS waiting in lines. You walk in at your appointed time, walk to the front of the “Reservations” line, and you get called before everyone else at each station. I’ve been in and out before some people got to the head of the first line. You feel like Paris Hilton, but without the social diseases and blank stare. Or 2. Go to a license plate agent and pay them to do it for you. They get all of your paperwork in order, verify your Cali-legal status, and go to the DMV for you. It costs around $50 down here, but it’s money well spent, IMHO.

Good luck.

Cheers,
Lenny

Thanks for the replies guys!

The part that's scaring me is that the only two stickers I find are these:

Federal Safety- right side of bike on frame below tank
Noise Restrictions - left side of bike on frame below tank.

I don't see anything about a "50 state" model. Can someone tell me where to locate this sticker?

Thanks much

I don't believe that it says anything about 50 state legality on any stickers on the bike, I think it's a digit in the vin number that shows it's CA legal or not. Anyhow if they give you crap about it I would just ride it around until you have enough miles on it to register it (I think you have to have about 7500 miles on it).

Although the VIN may have a digit as an identifier if a bike is a 50 state model, DMV surely doens't know anything about this. Plus, according to the manual (the page that shows the stickers and sticker placement on the bike) there is a sticker that specifically says "meets California emission standards" (or similar).

Having said all of that, I went to DMV on Friday and LUCKILY had a guy inspecting the bike that thought the bike was the coolest. I helped him by holding his flashlight to inspect the VIN onthe frame and then we both spent some time trying to locate the engine number (took my manual, so this helped a bit), and generally he was a cool guy. He looked for the "50 state" sticker, but there wasn't one. He basically just said that most bikes don't even have an emissions sticker and he signed off on everything.

I'm happy to say that I am now (OFFICIALLY) a Ducati 1098S owner. whew!
