This is what I did to stop the inadvertent falling over. The problem lies in the stock stand's inability to "overcenter" far enough to stay in the down position. I notched the stand a bit to allow it to go further forward. In the pic you can see the notch at the upper left on the stand. It mates with the "ears" on the bracket, which can be seen in the pic. You also have to open up the inside radius of that little bracket which allows the springs to clear the pivot when in the down position so it can fully travel to the stop. Or make a new one out of .062" SS as I did. I would highly recommend that you file the notch a bit at a time and try it without the springs until you get it right. That thing is not the most robust piece and going too far might stress it beyond it's breaking point. Anyway it works for me and no more accidental falling. If you look at the pic of the bike you can see the diff in angle between stock and the mod.

TC- You're right, it is how I park my bike. I put the sidestand down with my left foot until it's all the way forward and then gently lean the bike over until I'm sure the weight is being taken by the stand. Worked on every bike I've ever owned. Until the 1098. There have been numerous reports on here of 1098's falling over due to the kick stand not being forward enough. On every bike I've ever had the stand "snaps" forward and locks with a vengeance. Not so with this wimpy design because it BARELY overcenters and the least amount of forward force on the bike will cause it to fold up. Try this if you dare. If you have a 1098 put the stand down and then gently push on the rear of the bike. Better have someone there to catch it.

cloudrider I hear what you're saying, however I do have a 1098 and have happily done over 4,000 miles and it hasn't fallen off the stand once. Personally, I find the stand no different to any of the other Ducati that I've had.

I don’t like that the kick stand does not have that little numb that sticks out to kick it down with, I am always rubbing the fairing with my foot trying to get it out. I have to look down at it ever time I go to park my bike, pain in my a$$

Then spend more time riding it, and less time parking up

My method is thus:

1. Shut off ignition with bike in 1st gear (important!)
2. Push bike forward until it moves no further (important!)
3. Extract sidestand all the way forward.
4. Turn steering all the way to the left.
5. Lean the bike over until the weight is on the stand.

Because the bike's in gear and at the forward range of the travel, it can't move forward any further, and won't roll forward under normal circumstances that might lead to the sidestand retracting.

Yeah i got some new Sidi boots and found it impossible to kick that thing down i had to sort of use my heel then roll back my foot to push the stand right down with the ball of my foot what a pain until i got used to it.

Naw, it's well appreciated. In fact I'd like to see some more pics, I'm still not sure what exactly it is you did.

When the stand is down it goes against the bracket that mounts to the engine. That bracket has two "ears" that stick out that the sides of the slotted part of the stand go up against to limit travel. I put a notch in the front side of the slotted end of the stand to allow it to go further forward against those ears or tabs. Look at your stand and you'll see what I mean.

Cloud - does your bike lean over any further after you've modded it? Also does the flat base (already huge :D) angle forward more so it's more pointed at the ground?

I had a buddy with a 900 SS and on a warm day in alaska (yes there are actually those up there - it was alomst 65 F!!!) his kick stand pushed through the tarmack & his moped fell over in his drive way! I would be nervous about making that contact point smaller for those parking lot collections before a ride if that were the case.

Yeah it leans over a little further but not enough so the CG is approaching the bottom of the stand. As for the pad on the bottom it's angle hasn't changed that much either. However, like you, I'd pay attention were it hot out. Take a little 2"x2" block of wood along for those days maybe. IMHO it isn't a problem but that's me.

So you basically just "notched" the side stand deeper. Can you tell if the stand is steel or aluminum?
If it's aluminum is it cast or forged? I would be worried about weakening the stand.

It's alloy but not sure about cast vs forged. I share your concern about weakening as it's pretty minimal as it is. However the side angle that it comes down at is very shallow so the bending force on it IMO is not that great. It's almost straight down the axis of the stand. Tell you what. When it breaks and over she goes I'll post 1st thing and that'll be the end of it.

Sorry for bringing a thread back from the dead. But I had to say thanks. My 1098S that is 2 weeks old with 30 miles on it was in the driveway idling on Thursday warming up to ride. As I was putting my gear on, I heard the crash...looked over and my brand new bike was on it's left side. I wondered how this could have happened since I've never had a bike fall off of a side stand. I'm glad I'm not the only one. The kick in the nuts of the whole thing was the damage to the bike.

Scratched the left middle fairing, snapped the left mirror off, snapped the left clipon off, broken clutch lever, huge cracks in the tail and a broken shifter.

I've already ordered the parts (including some things I was going to order, but decided to do now since the bikes apart). It was an expensive lesson in how to give myself a trust complex with the sidestand on this bike. I'm definatly going to do some work and implement this fix. All told, it was a $2000 (closer to $3,000 if you include the Akrapovic slip-on that I added to the order) day that I didn't get to ride on a motorcycle that's brand new.

Medic,

Sorry to read about your mishap. Now may be a good time for you to upgrade from stock parts to some adjustable rear sets and levers, CF tail, etc.

(On a slight thread hijack, do you ride with any first-aid gear just in case you get into an accident? Just wondering.)

I did upgrade a few things. I ordered the Pazzo levers that I had wanted, as well as a set of the LE Acclign rearsets from Matrix Motosports. While I'm at the whole thing, I also decided to get an Akrapovic Ti slip on for it. So the bike is going to go through some revisions.

And to answer your question about if I ride with any first gear, I don't. It's probably not a bad idea...it's just something I've never done.

Same thing, while driving my then new 01 SS home from the dealer I came out of walmart to find it sunk over an inch into the fresh asphalt. We brazed this thing on the bottom, so it left duck tracks where it was parked. :D

It looks a little rough seven years later but gave me some piece of mind.
