I'm 6'4

I just went out and applied for financing on an 848 today.

It was as spur of the moment as it gets. I had done all my research on yamaha's current models but in my heart knew i wanted something red that tugged at my heartstrings like only a ducati can. So when it came down to it, after about a grand total of 6 minutes looking at the ducati's, i said F it, hook up an 848 lol.

When I sat on it it seemed comfortable enough. I had sat on a 749 and it seemed to fit like a glove. But they had sold their demo, but had 848's in stock. So I just said okie dokie lets do it.

When I got home I started having doubts about ride height, and comfort. My personal preference is I would rather be comfortable than have a ducati, regardless of how amazing a ducati is.

Its my first bike so I didnt want to go nuts and get a >1000cc bike. The 848 had lower cc engine and the same if not taller ride height. That was the clincher as with yamaha I had been lookin at an R1 and their R6 option was too small.

So, to sum up what im posting about.....

How does the 848 work with really tall people?

@ 6'4" could I have made a better decision? Is the 749 really a better bike for tall people? It just seemed a touch more suited to my dimensions, but that could have just been cuz the windshield was taller.

Im 6'2 and have installed the speedymoto triple clamp. This brings the bars up 15mm, so better on your back. You will have to install the taller windscreen as the air hitting your chest is a real pain. With the higher screen its great.

i c

ive tried searching this forum for any and all mention of tall riders and issues with bikes havent found much. one thing i have found is it can be an issue having to sort of crunch up more than a short rider, i mean being closer to a fetal position haha sorry for the funny visual but i think u get what im sayin.

will i be crunched up at all or can i actually hope to get a comfortable lean on an 848?

A double bubble screen should help clear the air flow over your head.

but does it look like a giant sitting on a moped? lol i dunno wanna look like frankenstein riding a toy-bike. now that analogy may be extremely unfair to such an exceptional piece as the 848, I just have a small window in which to change my mind and opt for a larger bike, perhaps a sport touring, but i rly want the 848.

was just pretty much hoping to hear, "ya mate, im 9 feet tall and the 848 is a comfortable ride, i never feel as though i am trying to fit on a bike that is too small for me, and when i ride it the bike and I look as we should, and not a mis-matched pair"

lol, so hopefully someone can put my mind at ease

thanks all for taking the time to read all this, it is immensely appreciated, as I know ya'll have red-devils in your garages calling to you all this while lol

but i am interested in the degree of the bend in the leaning position for tall people on the 848.

some good tips here on some ways to maximize comfort and riding position for taller blokes, any others? is it really that big a deal to begin with on the 848? If so is the 749 perhaps better suited to tall people? It just seemed a bit more comfortable for some reason when I sat on it.

The 848 seemed well enough, but a 1 minute sit down in a showroom isnt really going to tell me if the 848 is suited for taller guys comfort on a ride round town.

I'm 6'2" (35years old) and I'm just loving the 848. I started two years ago with a monster because I was concerned a superbike might be too much power, money, uncomfortable riding position, etc. Having just switched to the 848 I couldn't be happier.

I believe that the riding position is part of the superbike experience. It does get a little uncomfortable after awhile, but it is also an amazing feeling to be hunched over like you are racing.

I've found that getting a good grip with my knees not only helps ease the pressure on your wrists but adds to the feeling of being one with the bike. I also vary the angle of my elbows. I can ride for about 30 minutes with no problem, then the ride position is noticable for the next 30 minutes, then I need a break.

If you are planning on doing long rides you may consider a monster or hypermotard. For short trips the 848 is great. I've never ridden a 749 so I can't give a comparison for that. I'm sure that staying in good physical shape makes a big difference as well.

A 15 minute test ride would sure help you decide.

Just FWIW, buy any bike, ride and stop in front of a big store window, and look. You're gonna look like King Kong on it. It doesn't matter the bike. You're going to look huge on a sport touring bike as well. I even look like Goliath on a big BMW GS and I'm skinny/only 6'4". Years ago I vainly fretted about this. Now it's no big deal. I do know this... get the bike you really want versus the one you think you'll look best on. These are discretionary, emotional purchases and I've seen many disillusioned or ho-hum about their bike because they didn't give much weight to the heart.

Hey Soldier, I'm 6 2 and 213. I am in shape as well, but I second the thought of getting the bike that turns you on and the kind of riding you are doing.

I sat on the 848 6 different visits and also did my homework on it. If I can get on and be comfortable on a 2001 GSXR600, this bike will do fine. Again, riding style, experience and your pocket book should IMHO be the deciding factor.

Good luck in your decision and stay safe.

You'll be fine mate.
I'm 6'4" and ~220lbs and find it pretty comfortable. Looked at pretty much everything on the market in terms of fitting my legs in and the 1098/848 was the most comfortable. Everything Jap I couldn't get my legs under the tank cutouts.

Just got back from a weekend of riding around 400km with a backpack and feel fine. A taller screen may have helped, but not necessary.
