Since I am waiting to leave for work at the end of this month or the beginning of March I have nothing better to do than sit around all day:loser:. I find myself on ebay alot checking things out and heres what i've been thinking of.

There seems to be a decent amount 999's on ebay. A black 1098s is a bike i would sell my sister on the chinese slave market for and since i'm young, dumb and full of....testosterone, I will have no problem spending the cash to get one. HOWEVER....I do have a rational side and having three motorcycles for the price of a 1098s would be pretty cool, the third bike will be my track only bike i'll make myself famous on......I hope.

I've seen a couple of threads about 1098's having some pretty serious issues even before 1k miles, i'm assuming that these were the first model years though.

Basically I can get a 999 base or 'S' for 10k and under, buy a brand new 600cc supersport and still be under the cost of a 1098s. Then pick up a 99-01 600cc bike to mod for track use.

1098s Vs. 999s
-Which one is more likely to have issues?
-Is the maintenance schedule the same?
-Cost of maintenance, is there a difference?

I already know the 1098 will absolutely run circles around a 999 but i do not and have no intention of street racing. I have nothing to prove to anyone on a rice rocket, the fact that i'm on a duc speaks for itself:D

I still want the 1098 like an addict wants coke but for once in my life i'm trying to think rationally. I can see that there are alot of smart people on here, so help me out guys:) What would you do and why?

hmm... tough dilemma. How to spend boat loads of money on italian motorcycles...

Personally, i have an 07, not early build, 1098 base. So far, other than the fuse to the fuel pump blowing, i have had 0 issues (that i wouldn't expect from a high performance machine anyways). I have had a stall probably 4 times in my entirety of owning the bike.

I've heard people claim the 999 handles better than the 1098. Matter of opinion. I have saddled a 999, but never REALLY driven one. At the point of 135 hp vs. 160, yeah, big difference...Seriously, but as long as you have nothing to prove, the 999 will be fast as hell as you'll ever need it.

I don't know much about maintenance schedules, but the 1098 was supposed to be easy to maintain, right???

One thing to consider, having 3 bikes, when you feel sensible, you can keep ms. Italy safe in garage town while you play on your kamikaze 600. If something happens (god forbid), to either bike, you have a spare.

Another thing to consider, is that IF you buy the black 1098s, you have a black 1098s. I would then be jealous of you. It was my first choice too... Its the bike you've always wanted, and now you have one, you rule. That's the type of bike i would put on a pot of coffee and just look at for hours on end on a sunday morning, and maybe talk to it once in a while (quietly, so nobody else can hear)...

It's up to you. Keep in mind, in 4 years, ducati will have something new, and the 1098 will be just like the 999

Alot goes down to athetics. Which do you like the best. As far as maintenance, the latter model 999's require pulling the head if a valve adjustment is needed. I dumped my 999 for the 1098 and have never regretted it. I don't even think I'd want both. I was sitting on the 999 for a while waiting to sell. I found it a bother to have to ride the 999 once or twice a week to keep the battery up. All I wanted to do was ride the 1098.

If you want one bike for road and track (and can afford repairs to the (almost) inevitable occasional off) then go for the 1098s.

If you want to hit the track but dont want to hit it with a Duc, you need a second bike.

The 999 is still more bike than most in here could probably exploit and a regular track bike would would hone your skills so that you could probably breeze past many 1098 pilots! I dont think I would go for the additional 600 for the road (considering your rational side!) and use that cash to cover the higher maintenance costs of the 999 and to get the track bike up to spec and kept in good repair.

OR

Look for a second hand base 1098 and your track bike. Lower maintenance costs but a bit less cash in reserve too.

I would get the 1098 because you don’t want to be that guy on the 999, when you see the guy on the 1098, wishing you would have bought the 1098. Follow me?

I totally understand your thinking though. Infact I was somewhat the same way going from a 600RR 8,200 out the door to a 1098 at 16. My thoughts, I could buy two 600s for the price of the 1098.

I think owning a brand new bike is going to be the best bet when it comes to issues. When you buy something new, especially off of eBay, who knows how the last person treated it. There is nothing like owning new, knowing that it was taken’ care of by you from the get go. I can also say owning a 1098 standard with the stock exhaust I have had 0 issues with the bike to this point.

Hope this helps some and good lucky making your decision.

:crazyeyes Yo Ian1098, why not be the 1st to track a Hyosung n buy a 1098. Imagine twice the motor of your hyosung, brakes that could stop the 1098 n your H650 at the same time, and a bike that appeals to your senses than a bike that makes sense.

Now back to your sensibilities and realities.

1. Are you truly ready for a liter bike, it's a major step up IMHO.

2. The Hyosung, I know it's been out in the US for only a year. Have you been riding longer than that?

3. Are you truly ready for a torque monster like the 1098. My buddies prepped a 650 for Hyosung's MotoGP exhibit, the bike was a great entry level (Newbie) bike and a bit of stretch to call a formidible supersport type bike. The brakes are far too weak and the the shocks are not fully adjustable.

4. Have you taken riders or track day courses? The 1098 has enough power to push wide if you feed it too much power in legal speed turns.

5. Have you considered the 848?

A used 999 is an excellent cost effective choice, but really a lot a bike as well. It wasn't motor that was it's reason for drawbacks, it was its controversial looks following the 916/996/998's. The 999 has won WSB countless times, it's a beast, just lesser when compared to the 1098.

Wow, I just pulled a VQ (Jason).....LOL. Sorry I rained on your parade, but I want to give you something to think about as you peruse ebay and daydream about a Duc. May I suggest a strong look at an 848 to step up to, a beast in itself but likely more forgiving than a 1098or maybe even riding a riding buddy's supersport with radial brakes to get a feel of what a true supersport bike feels like to ride as compared to the Hyosung.

If you are truly truly ready for a Ducati commitment/experience....welcome to the family. But make sure you can ride the bull or the bull will ride you into the pavement.

I'm going to sound like a cocky douchebag but......I can handle pretty much any bike i get on. I've taken both beginner and experienced rider course. Came out top of the class in both ones. In the experienced rdier course even the instructor pulled my dad aside(my dad is an instructor also)and said "You know know, that kid can ride a fucking bike"and he's known to put pretty much everyone down about something. Besides, all i've ever ridden were liter bikes since i was 15 and i'm 21 now. I only bought the hyosung because i needed to build my credit so I bought the naked sport one for $5500 and I actually get compliments on it all the time. Now that i'm done sounding like an arrogant prick.....I also dont do anything stupid on the road, I am notorious for getting a little speed happy in twisties but who doesn't? I dont ride like an idiot like pretty much every kid that gets a new super sport. I'd rather keep my $20k motorcycle tire side down.

That and after owning a 650cc V twin i swore my next bike woud be a liter bike.

I can still pick up a cheap jap 600 even if I get the base, but thats it. That would be the racing bike. I dont want to spend more on another bike to ride around on also.

If I can find a black 999s, that would be badass. I absolutely love both bikes....it's just that i'm a horsepower junkie. Bigger is better.
