I have been researching tires and I have no clue on which to purchase for the upcoming season.

I don't ride hard, but I might open her up a little this season:D.

Now rear tire size is 190/55, but I see a lot of people using 190/50. What is the difference? (lean)

Which brand of tire are good for use with the 1098.

I see alot of people are choosing the Pilot Power, but what bout the Pirelli Diablo III, Pirelli Diablo Rossa, Pirelli Starda.

What about thread life, what is the expectation.

I was thinking about the Pilot Power, but the I've heard tales of slipping in the corners.

Thanks for the input.

My personal fav (for non-track day's) of all things is the Dunlop Qualifier.. Last almost as long as the PP's but more feel and stickier.. The 2 CT's have a funny little transition (to me anyway) as you lean over off the harder center onto the softer radious when you turn in. I just couldn't get used to it. Btw.. The Dunlop Q's work well on the track day's as long as you don't over heat them.. So Cal track day's are often 100deg.+

Diablo's are too hard, great milage.. No experiance with the others..

My last two sets on my VTR1000 have been Dunlop Sportmax. Reasonably easy to heat up - even on cold English mornings and last a few thousand miles. Much easier to control when wet and you brake the back-end loose. Slightly softer that the Qualifiers mentioned above.

Used many different types of tires over the years, but I have not found one I like better than Pirellis latest tires including the OEM tires. I will stick with the SC2 or the OEM. BTW, the OEM stuff is only sold at the dealer and is expensive. The Pirelli distrubutor in So Cal is Tigershark. If you choose to go with Pirelli they will give you a good deal. I think it's $325.00 to your door for the SC2 front and rear, but don't quote me on that. Let us know what you go with and how you like it.

I got the metzeler racetechs on my bike k1 on front and k2 on the rear tires are every bit as good as the super corsas, maybe even better because they are cheaper. They are the exact same tire as the stock pirelli except for the tread pattern. They are even made in the same manufacturing facility as the pirelli. From what I understand metzeler and pirelli are both owned buy the same company. The metzelers are alot cheaper your just paying the extra cash for the pirelli name.

Difference between 190/55 and 190/50. The “190” tells you the nominal width of the tire, which is 190mm at the widest point. The “55” or “50” indicates the height of the side-wall of the tire. Ducati 1098 comes with 190/55-R17 (R is for rim/radial and 17 is your wheel diameter). I will recommend you use 55 series because that’s how 1098 is setup. Any modifications in height will impact the bike, suspension, traction, ride and so forth. Plus, the more side-wall you have, the more comfortable the ride is.

Brand of tires. Well, everyone has different demands and choices. I will go with Pirelli. The Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa Pro (SP) has been noted as the “most sticky tires on the corners and traction is superior” by magazines named Motor Cyclist and Sport Rider. Also, there are new brand of tires called Pirelli Diablo Rosso. So far, I heard very nice things about them. They might be superior than Supercorsa Pro.

Tread life. I don’t know much about tread life but its mostly depends how you ride. You can expect to last between 3,000 to 5,000 miles. (Note: 3K or 5K on a bike is equal to 30,000 and 50,000 miles on cars).

I hope it helps. And have a wonderful and safe summer 2008.

I am very happy with the OEM´s they stick very well to the road in the SoCal Canyon´s. Further I would try maybe to the Supercorsa, but changing to something new when the old performs as good is always a playing game. I would not reccoment for the lean drive a 190/50.

I understand that the SC (1,2,3) tires are different than our OEM Supercorsa's. Does anyone have a link for the OEM tires?

you'd have to buy a new 1098 every time you needed tires:yo:

The OEM tires are a different tire and not available to the public (as far as I know) like the d.o.t Pirelli's are availble to us. From what I understand they're close to a cross between SC2 & SC3 or something like that..

Ill be getting the new Diablo Rossos, they have been getting awesome reviews, should be a better street tire than the dragon supercorsas. not that the dragons are bad tires, i love them, but they're a bit too pricey for my riding style on the street. the 190/55 rossos are due out in a month or two.
