You guys may have seen the thread we had going regarding the fuel light coming on way too soon. Well I live in northern Cali, so the weather let me get out for a nice long ride today. As I mentioned in the other thread, my light comes on at about 2.5 gallons, or 90-100 miles.
For today's ride I topped off and hit the hills headed for the coast. As expected the light came on around 90 miles into the ride. From fuel calcs I knew I should have at least 60 more miles, plenty to get home. less than a mile from house the bike just died. Thankfully I was on a neighborhood street and not the freeway.
I coasted to the side of the road, and the first thing I did was open the tank. I saw no gasoline, nor did I see or hear any swish around when I rocked the bike. I walked it to the gas station, filled up, and she fired right up. I looked at the odometer, I only got 131 miles off that tank. I then looked at the pump, she topped off with 3.61 gallons!!!!!
I have a really bad feeling this isn't a 5 gallon tank. I'm sure it has 5 gallons of volume, but the instructions say not to fill to a point where gas gets in the neck. Was I reading that wrong? I'm thinking its 5 gallons, but if you only fill to the bottom of the cylindrical insert, you're not getting the full 5 gallons.
I ran it dry, then filled it to the bottom of the neck, and I only got 3.6 gallons into the tank. Am I stopping at the wrong point? If I didn't do anything wrong, then expect to only get 3.5 gallons in your tank.
