You guys may have seen the thread we had going regarding the fuel light coming on way too soon. Well I live in northern Cali, so the weather let me get out for a nice long ride today. As I mentioned in the other thread, my light comes on at about 2.5 gallons, or 90-100 miles.

For today's ride I topped off and hit the hills headed for the coast. As expected the light came on around 90 miles into the ride. From fuel calcs I knew I should have at least 60 more miles, plenty to get home. less than a mile from house the bike just died. Thankfully I was on a neighborhood street and not the freeway.

I coasted to the side of the road, and the first thing I did was open the tank. I saw no gasoline, nor did I see or hear any swish around when I rocked the bike. I walked it to the gas station, filled up, and she fired right up. I looked at the odometer, I only got 131 miles off that tank. I then looked at the pump, she topped off with 3.61 gallons!!!!!

I have a really bad feeling this isn't a 5 gallon tank. I'm sure it has 5 gallons of volume, but the instructions say not to fill to a point where gas gets in the neck. Was I reading that wrong? I'm thinking its 5 gallons, but if you only fill to the bottom of the cylindrical insert, you're not getting the full 5 gallons.

I ran it dry, then filled it to the bottom of the neck, and I only got 3.6 gallons into the tank. Am I stopping at the wrong point? If I didn't do anything wrong, then expect to only get 3.5 gallons in your tank.

Where are you getting 5 gallons for the tank?

It's only 4.1 gallons. Which if you think about what you state you topped off at with leaving a little room in the tank as recommended that's pretty close to 4.1 gallons

The manual states the tank is 15.5 dm3 (cubic decimeters) litre.

1 liter or (1 dm3) = 0.2642 gallons x 15.5 dm3 = 4.0951 gallons.

Sorry, that would be my bad. Here is the wording on the spec sheets I saw "4.1 gal. including 1 gal. reserve" I took this as to mean an additional gallon reserve, total 5.1.
This would also explain the light at 2.5 gallons, which no longer seems as off

Thanks for the reality check

5 gallons

I know the answer was given, but when I first read this I did,'t pay attention because it was imperial. Since I was a kid, and we still do call it a 5 gallon can, which converts to appx 22-23 litres. Remember ducati has the option to buy a bigger tank which ends up being around that capacity. My 749 was better on gas when taking it easier than my zx6rr, but really no difference when honking on it. 130x1.6=appx 210 km's which is right on par with some mixed cruising and and hard acceleration.
