If your bike has the stock chain, a 180.

A 200 will fit on the rim, but it will contact the swingarm.

To get a wider tire, you will need to lengthen the chain and rotate the rear wheel eccentric back to create more room between tire and swingarm.

If you go wider, the bike will handle worse.

Any particular reason you want to go bigger ? ..
tnx guys, no particular reason i just like the looks on wide tire in the back :D but dont want to sacrifice handling so is it safe to go 200? just got my first ducati last week for weekends rides and not tracking or anything
If the 200 even fits it will sacrifice handling. I would personally stick to the 180.
Even a 190/55 hits in stock trim. If you want a bigger tire in a Ducati you raise the profile not the width. With some minor mods you can get a 180/60 to fit. It's a littler wider than a 190 and taller. Fatter meat is meant for being leaned over, not straight up and down. That's drag racing tires your looking for.
hey garrett
I interested on more info on getting a 180/60 to work on a 848

See my post above. You'll need a longer chain and move the rear tire back.....
Can't comment on biggest tire on stock 848 rear wheel, as I lost the OEM wheels soon after getting the bike. Dunlop GPA Pro in 190/60 and D212GPA (UK) in a 200/55 as well as Pirelli SC V2 in a 200/55 fit on a 6" rear with no rubbing issues with the eccentric all the way back (with chain lengthened a couple of links, IIRC) without messing with the rear brake mount.

Little bit more physical effort needed for the quick right-left-right/left-right-left transitions, but no biggie at my speed compared to the effort I was exerting on OEM chassis bits. :)

Factory rear wheel is 5.5 inches wide.
If i want to run 3 teeth up in the rear and switch to a 520 chain. how many links will the chain need to be?

You'll need to add two links. Along with Ducati and the chain manufacturers, I personally wouldn't recommend a 520 chain on a high torque bike like a 848.
All I need is 2 links? Doesn't going up in rear sprocket take up the extra links and I wouldn't be able to move eccentric further back?
You may also need to lengthen the slot in the rear brake caliper mount to extend the chain to its fullest extent. Motowheels had sold a bracket at one point for this.
I went up 2 teeth in the rear last year (from 39t stock to 41t); and I had to add 2 links (from 98 links to 100), otherwise the rear tire rubbed against the inside of the swingarm. What kind of riding do you do? The reason I ask is I also experimented this year and added 43t and that was too tall for a couple of the tracks I ride. All three rev limiter lights would come on halfway down the back straight at Mid Ohio race track.

I'm not sure how 42t would be, but if you're riding on street only it might be just fine.

As an FYI, I added two more links for the 43t, (102 links total), and also moved the rear brake caliper bracket locating pin back 16mm (drilled and tapped swingarm), in order to fully get the eccentric back to the 3 o'cock (farthest) position. You can do this, or as Rusty mentioned you can extend the slot in the bracket. If you're simply looking to pep up the bike, I would go to 41t in the rear, add 2 links and forget about it. No need to do all of the other stuff.

Why not? There are high tensile chains out there that can handle the torque. They are expensive tho.
So i could fit a 180/60 with 101 link and use either 41t, 42t or 43 teeth depending which one I find fitting to the track I go to?
I personally have a 190 on my 12' 848 Evo, and I love it. Might not be the best on the track, but for the backroads its awesome. I feel like it dives down into the corner much faster than the 180 did.
