Can anyone please help with locating the engine number on a 2014 899 Panigale. California DMV will no register the bike without seeing the engine number. and yes I bought it new out of state and had it shipped to CA. Thanks

Page 21 of your owners manual

"Note
These numbers identify the motorcycle model and should always be indicated when ordering spare parts.
The engine identification number is located in the motorcycle front side on the horizontal head cylinder lower side, near the starter motor and the generator cover."

A digital copy for all owners manuals can be found on Ducati's website under maintenance. I suggest downloading it and reading it cover to cover. Put it on your phone so it's always with you.

Do you have to remove the plastic to find it?

I don't own a 899. But judging by the picture attached from the owners manual and location, I would assume the side panels cover it.
Have you not tried to look on your own bike using the suggestion? You might answer your own question faster.

I did and now have the plastic off on the left side but still no luck. The information in the owners manual is vague at best. Thanks

I have found it. You will need to remove the upper and lower plastic on the shifting (left) side of the bike and it is on the bottom. What a pain...Thanks for the help Miles
