Hey everyone.
I have been reading this forum for years it seems like. Any who. I graduated college in May with a bachelors degree in Engineering. I got a job at B/E Aerospace a few months back and now I can financially afford my dream bike. My only question is should I wait till April and buy a new 1299 or get a great deal on a used 1199?
I have had 2 bikes in the past. a 2007 Daytona which I loved and put about 18k in 2 years living in the midwest and a cbr600RR.
I appreciate the help from everyone.
Thank you

Hi Nick! Welcome to the forum! Leave all hope behind! LOL :)

Lets see… tough question to answer because the 1299 reviews are just hitting the news stand. The 100cc more engine is suppose to have more midrange, which is a common complaint about the 1199. I've ridden the 1199 a lot and it's got PLENTY of midrange, yet it's a very rev-happy engine. There are many other changes to the bike then just the engine, but they're all minor stuff. If you were to pickup a 2013 or 2014 1199, you wouldn't be missing very much.

Pre-owned and demo Panigale's out here in California seem to be everywhere, so maybe if you look around at some dealers, finding a low-milesage almost new preowned bike will save you thousands of dollars. Buying a new bike includes lots of bullshit fee's you don't have to pay when you buy used.

Also… you should try the little brother 899 as well. Maybe do a demo ride on both to get a feel for them because the 1199 is a HUGE upgrade from a Daytona or CBR600. Lots more responsibility in the throttle department. With the money you save on buying the 899, you can buy a years worth of tires! :)

Good luck with your decision and happy near year!

In my view, the ultimate Ducati is the "R" models... I bought a new 2008 1098R, and after seven years, I still love the bike,... everytime I ride, I have a big smile, sometimes laugh, in my helmet.
But, the 1299 Panigali is an interesting choice, although not an R model (yet)...it is the second generation Ducati Panigali... kinda attractive.....
I guess, if I were in your shoes... I would go for the 1199R, or if I could find a used 1199 SL ( in great shape).... I would have to go to town on that deal!!! A friend bought one of the SLs, and I am here to tell you, it is a gift from Ducati, similar to the Biggest Ducati Gift, the Desmocedici!!!! There is my choices, go big or stay at home!!!!....just sayin....

Thanks for the advice 219R. I was looking at the 1199R because you can pick up a used one any where from 24 to 26k now. They have a used 1199R at the dealership in Villa park Il for 25,900 I think. I like your saying "go big or stay at home!" :) I would love to get a 1199 SL but for 60k i might be afraid to even ride it lol! ha! It is an incredible machine though! Thanks for the advice 219R. I appreciate it!

Thanks for advice Tuned!! Happy new years!! Looking around on forums and ebay, I have seen a bunch of used 1199s for sale. Sadly I am not from Cali ha! I'm from Illinois where it's only nice enough to ride about 5 months out of the year IMO :( (Some people here are riding when its 20 degrees still) Last summer a friend and I went to Motor Cycle Center in Villa park to demo the 1199S and the 899. We both rode about 25 miles together and then switched bikes. It was a hell of a time!! I enjoyed every minute of the test ride and was smiling from ear to ear but it was hard to get a good feel of the bike with only 20 mins in stop and go traffic.
Thanks for the advice Tuned. I really appreciate it!

You are welcome.... Here is why... I have had, and raced, many different motorcycles.... from Norton, Honda 500 v4, Suzuki GSXR 1100, ... Nothing has come even close to the Ducati, (my first race Ducati was a Pantah 500/600), to the Ducati 1098R.... If I had the money and I was your age, I would figure out how to own either an SL, 1199R, Desmo, or even a pristine low milage 1098R/1198R......(in that order)... I would not settle for less....but I am a Sport/Race Bike Ducati Guy!!!
....just sayin.......

The 899, 1199, and 1299 are all excellent bikes..

Might want to test ride them to make a final decision.

There are plenty of new leftovers sitting around worth looking into -

I have a 848EVO (2012) but after deciding that I want a little more horsepower with a few extra features, I bought myself a 2013 1199 Pani S Tricolore. Man, I love it! I bought in Nov of (2013).
