What's the mating surface look like on the next piece (sprocket carrier)? That should give you a clue.

But when it doubt...always helpful to check the OEM diagrams.

This is the right way; I have a thread on here from a while ago that covers a rear wheel sprocket side nut that came completely off of my 09 848 during a ride. I took it in to the dealer to figure out WTH happened and they found this spacer on backwards--apparently it came like that from the factory.

You've got it on right if you placed the small end on the axle first...
