Having just upgraded to an R to get the extra 100cc's, I would spew if I could get this in 2009 for 1/2 the cost.
Probably like the 999R owners felt when the 1098 came out.

But they have always improved the breed with each new model release haven't they?

I bet they would still have the more expensive R with the TC, TTX, and whatever else it has, the S with the 'average' suspension bits, the better rims, and the base. I bet you would not get anywhere near the extra 20 odd hp in the S or the base, that you would get in the R, for an extra 100cc or not. In short, I bet the R would get a bit more for the same price too, thus preserving the investment of the existing R owners.
