Hello everyone, While I ws riding home the other day, I started losing power on the highway going around 70 and what was sounding like an exhaust leak (light tapping). I turned into the service road as I didnt want to incur further damage, if there was any. As I waited for a tow truck, I could not get the bike restarted. So whe n I get home, I take fairings off and hook up a jumper cable from wifeys Honda Pilot to my battery and it starts! I figure..."GREAT"! Hold on now, I still hear this tapping sound that sounds just like my open clutch on opposite side of the clutch right underneath the gas tank. I think it may be a valve as I have not had them serviced. I was going to take it in to get belts and valves serviced as my bike now has 16XXX miles. But then this happens. Oh by the way, I have new style Termi's slash cuts and open dry clutch. Any 2nd opinions?

Thanks guys

I agree with spudd. Do not start it until you look at it. You should have changed the t-bels and valves at 7500 miles. 16000 miles is way over due. It could be a coil arcing making a ticking noise. It could be an exhaust leak. They have had problems with the 70mm termi's breaking a weld on the bottom. That is a pretty loud noise. It could be a valve or a pulley making noise.

He means the spark may be jumping from the coil or plug wire to ground (instead of grounding through the spark plug) it would make a sharp popping sound, similar to a quiet ticking.

It would take one cylinder out. I had a coil crack open and had to silicone it to finish the trip, but it wasn't on a Ducati.

It's more likely something else, but you could check for it by cranking the engine over in the dark if you feel safe turning it over with the ignition on.

Broken connecting rod!!!!

So I have time to finally look at it and I take the oil strainer out and out come big chunks of metal and brass! And, as I place my fingers in there, I grab a hold of the connecting rod!!! and one bolt!!!. I am pissed!!! I never raced this bike and I never took really over 9000 rpm and this??? Please chime in with experienced opinions on what I should do next.

when you dont do the required maintenance you will get problems like these, grats on being the owner of a new engine.

Actually, I found out through the first owner that the dealership (whom I will not name at this time until I go over this with them) rebuilt the motor back in 2009. I did not find out until after I bought it (my fault). They did new belts and valve specs at the time as well. I found out after my original post. So I am really not overdue as originally thought. I have put only 7k miles and change. Are the con rods bolts just supposed to fall out? I dont think this is normal, which is why I am taking my parts in plastic baggies and oil samples as well. I know this is 4 years later, but it's worth a try in my opinion.

Yes this is all a bit dependent on what the original repair was.If the shells and rod-bolts were replaced it tends to suggest that there was a problem in this area originally.

The dealer is unlikely to take much responsibility after so much time and mileage. It shouldn't have happened though, and (as you said) is more likely to relate to the repair than any inherent fault in the engine design.

Good luck with it. You are up for extensive work, or as suggested above - a replacement engine. Approach the repairer gently, and let us know what happens. You shouldn't really have to wear the whole cost of this under the circumstances.

As to the prior maintenance - the oil should be changed more often than specified. About 3,500 - 4,000 miles max. The engine oil is the only maintenance you could have carried out which may relate to the failure. But it is more likely that it was a less-than-ideal repair.

(The belts should be tension-adjusted every 7,500 miles, but only need replacing every 15,000 miles, just for the record. Or at 4 years, regardless of mileage).

Well, I went to the dealership today and they said they would contact Ducati NA, however, made no promises (which I figured). Deep down I feel nothing is going to work in my favor. So my next question is if anyone knows anyone that knows anyone that has a good condition 1098 engine somewhere. If a miracle happens and hell freezes over and Ducati gives me a new motor, I will immediately post and let everyone know.
