My dealer is telling me that the 15K mile service is going to cost between $1,600 and 1700 dollars. Has anyone had this service performed? And at what cost? Thanks in advance
Thanks for the advice man. I came out of a Harley Screaming Eagle so I thought there's no way it could be more expensive than that. I was wrong. After reading your post, the dealer will only service the bike completely because of the liability of not knowing what I have done and how I have done it. Of course they want to do the complete job themselves so they will get paid. I guess I can see it both ways. There is a lot of pride in the price of a duc. It wants to be on the level with a Ferrari. That car more lands on a flatbed and heads back to the dealer for its quality work done at the factory. In other words both bike and car are overpriced, not worth it part for part.
So they pride that counter shock when you walk up to it and order replacement parts. Buying a duck only a wallet can keep it on the road. I'd never bike this kind of bike if I didn't have the wallet for it. WTF where you thinking?
15k is more of a 'handhold' of the owner being clueless as to how to maintain a motorcycle. Sounds like the going rate of a major service. But if you are mechanically inclined, can strip the bike down before it goes to the dealer, it's the labor to peel off the fairing to remove the tank to get to the valves.
Roll in a stripped bike, have the service writer say valve adjust and, and check throttle sync only. This should be more of a flat rate being all the crap is removed to get to the valves. Only downside I see if the need of the gas tank for the engine to run to check sync.
Figure the shop labor rate is over $100 and hour, it might take a competent mechanic to set the valves for say 2-3 hours at the most. You are down to $300 for a valve job only, and the time to hookup the sync tool to check balance. Not mechanically inclined, sell the kids to pay for the hobby.
