Full Termi c02 settings.

After discovering that there are about 70 bolts/screws to undo to allow me to remove all the bodywork I decided to fit my full Termi system while the bike was in bits to save me having to remove everything again later.

I fitted the system and took the bike immediately to my local dealer who reset the TPS and tried to change the C02 setting to the recommended 4%/4.5%. First he informed his Ducati computer that the bike was a 999 because he said that there was no adjustment for the 1098 on the computer and that stating that the bike was a 999 would allow adjustment to be made.
He could not get anywhere near the correct settings so attempted to do it properly by removing the two brass plugs from the pipework and inserting two tubes which connect to a meter. Using the screws on the throttle bodies and the Ducati computer the best he could get was around 2%.

His thoughts were that the cam/valve timing was off (As he has seen numerous times) which restricted the amount of adjustment for the c02.
He said to run the bike until the first service (another 350 miles) and he would reset everything and set the timing etc which would allow him to adjust the mixture to the correct levels.

Anyone on here heard of this problem or if any dealers read this have you experienced this.

My 749R had a similar problem and once he set the cam/valve timing it was a differnt bike, much more responsive, faster, smoother, sounded different.

Before anyone says that the tech does not know what he is doing, he is a very experienced Ducati technician who has numerous Ducati recognitions and has just completed yet another course in Italy specifically on the 1098.

Why didn't he use the 1098 setting in the diagnostic tool menu?

did he adjust the trim?

Your tech is the first I have read about that could not get the CO past 2%

Setting the CO correctly requires two tools. An exhaust gas analyzer and the Ducati diagnostic tool.

The Tech had the Ducati computer and a separate gas analyzer. He said that you can adjust the mixture through the computer using the bikes ecu and by touching the up/down arrows on the computer screen, which he tried. He had the sensor pipe in the end of the exhaust first but this would not work well so he removed the two screws in the pipework and installed two tubes which plugged into the analyzer. He then started the bike and adjusted the two screws on the throttle bodies along with the arrows on the Ducati touch screen but it would just not go to 4%. What he said to me was that the 1098 could not be adjusted so you had to inform the Ducati computer that it was a 999 ??? to trick it !

This was when he said about valve timing needing adjustment. I personally do not know what the trim is, would you recommend that he did something else to get the mixture to 4% or 4.5%

To be honest I did not book the bike in, he was very busy and I turned up at the dealers with my bike unannounced and asked if he could reset the TPS so that I could use the bike. He spent about 45 minutes on the bike and did not charge a penny.

Any suggestions welcome, not that I want to go in next time and tell him his job but if I know any tips it might help.

Here is the proceedure:

Reset the tps.

Hook up the exhaust gas analyzer to the header pipes at the two plugs. Don't put the probes in the exhaust, that won't work.

close both airbleed screws all the way and then back out each one 1/4 of a turn. Take a measurement using the exhaust gas analyzer.

Using the Ducati diagnostic tool, go into the 1098 menu. Go into the "trim" sub menu and raise the trim. this is done by touching the arrows on the screen. The bikes come stock at 0, the range is -15 to +50. What this will do is raise the CO level in BOTH cylinders. Raise the trim until the leanest cylinder is reading 4-4.5%.

Save the setting.

Using the exhaust gas analyzer, open the screw on the rich cylinder until the CO comes down to the 4-4.5% level.

Re set the TPS.

Note: If you want to back the brass screws out more than 1/4 turn be my guest. You will have to dial in more trim to compensate for it though.

If these are the steps he followed then, yes, you probably do have a timing issue. I would not wait until 600 miles. If you do that you will pay for the adjustment. If you do it now, it is under warranty. :D

I know there is a setting in the Ducati tool for the 1098. In fact there are 2 of them. one for the base and one for the S. Perhaps his tool needs to be updated or something.

I was told by the dealer that the full termi ecu is just one of the earlier ecus and that they have to play the trick it game. For what it's worth they claim that the CO's were set at 4.5 and I've got one black spark plug and one white. It is going back this Monday for another adjustment. All I want to see is a pair of insulators with a nice tan fuel ring at the base and they can set the CO where ever they need to in order to achieve that.

Plug color is not a good indicator of the fuel/air mixture. Way too many variables to use that as an indicator with any degree of accuracy. Besides, when you look at the porcelain, you should look deep down inside the plug where the porcelain meets the metal part of the plug.
