Yeah that's one of my all time faves. They should take current technology and split an 1198 in half, most of the parts already there, and build something bitchin. Small displacement but true thoroughbred for newbies and racers alike. Would be great for insurance and maybe we'd see less Ninja 250s here (Toronto is the Ninja 250 capital of the world, it seems...).

I also saw from your link that Cagiva. It looks interesting, but I'd like to see two rotors in the front, even if they were smaller. Something wrong with a one rotor front end to me...

At 50,000 pounds the price of entry is pretty steep.

Brett ... So they couldn't build and updated version? I don't see how you could patent just a single and mean KTM is building on right? ... the RC4, which kinda has my interest! (please don't flame on me too hard)

The Cagiva Mito will always be on my wish list.

I had hopes for the Fischer but sitting on it dispelled most of those. That tank is possibly the dumbest thing I've ever seen on a motorcycle.

As I was talking to Dal about in the Sink I do think the world needs an insanely light forty to fifty horsepower street bike. That there's a nine month waiting list for Ninja 250's in my area reinforces that.

I'd like to see full sized bikes with smaller motors. Like a late model IL4 gsxr 400 in a 600 chassis. And a ducati with like a 15krpm 500cc twin. Stuff that makes like 50-65 to the wheel so you can rag the shit out of it on the street and not be going tripple the limit

yeah i nearly bought one, fast as hell, the 550 are putting out 70 hp.......but the problems turned me off.......the fact that aprillia only give 3 months warranty on a new bike said it all....i went with the husky, not quite as fast but 2 year factory warranty convinced me

I'll be the buzz killer here while raining on my own parade for a minute.

It would be neat If Ducati would release a thumper. I'd stand at attention for that one.
But being realistic, we all now how they would go about it. They would do the traditional Ducati media hoopla on it to judge interest. Naturally the public will go ape shit over it as Borgo Panagiali would draw direct lineage from the supermono. Pre production testing 'leaks' will tell us it will trounce 600 multis to get the feeding frenzy going. Customer deposits will be encouraging.

80 hp 66 ft lbs torque
221 lbs
'feels like a 125 GP bike

After reality sets in...

53 hp 44 ft lbs
371 lbs
'feels like a 600
$13,720.00

341 sold world wide in a two year period.

God I'm a dick.

Ok, $12,180 in Loonies or bucks.
I'd jizz all over it but as it would be the 'first big single sportbike' I think Duc would to their assumed advantage still price it at the top tier of acceptability based on an anticipated volume. Smart marketing at it's best.

Here's a different tact.
Considering a bike of this nature and demographic appeal and again at an assumed lower price point, I wouldn't be surprised if the Borgo boys had something provided by a 'satellite' operation in Korea or China. Slap some large DUCATI stickies on the tank and peddle it. Their first contemporary foray into a mass appeal product.

Oh jesusHchrist... Did I just create the next Buell Blast?

As sty hangs head in shame while walking to the fridge to wash his mouth out with $9 per case beer.

Woww what a price for a stupid one cilinder that won't be worth shit after a few years

just by an mx bike and buy a conversion kit if you really want to
Still don't see the point of racing a one cilinder on such a big track:wtf:

Get a supermoto, you'll probably have more fun on it then on any bike you ever had.
Doesn't this look *1000 times cooler?

After riding my wife's 250 today, I felt the need to revive this thread. Seriously, how perfect would a small capacity sportbike from Ducati be? I would bet it would out sell the monster.

Yeah I'm sure they could do a really cool design, small engine, target a price of 4k$ otd and they would sell that like crazy.
I don't really see that coming though.

there are several factors as to why ducati has not produced another mono. First is although the public clamours for a single cylinder road bike they have proven to be poor sellers, the buell blast, and the BMW f640s is a good example of this. Second the cost to produce thumpers is nearly the same as its larger capacity multi cylinder brothers, thus retail price is not as low as we would hope it would be. Now you may sight KTM and Cagiva as examples of success with mono's but remember that KTM already has several thumpers in their line up. Cagiva at the begining of the Mito revival project, strategically allied themselves with Indian company Kinetic engineering, and planned to buy there engines from husqvarna, thus reducing the cost of R&D, bringing up another issue, would the public buy a indian built italian? perhaps, but would you pay premium price for a indian built ducati, would you still consider it a ducati? I dont believe they would although lower end brands like paiggio and cagiva can get away with exporting there major production to taiwan, china, india, etc I dont think ducati loyalists would stand for this as it would cheapen the brand. This isnt to say that ducati wont build another mono, I certainly hope they do, but unless they figure out how to offset production costs and find the right target market that would prove profitable, it seems unlikely that they will:(
