I have the same question so I look forward to any answers. The only real difference I can see is slightly better video and picture specs and you get the wifi remote with the black edition but i am not sure if the these will make any noticeable difference for the $100 price difference. I had a look at a silver edition next to the hero 2 and there is a noticeable difference in size between the two.

I am not sure of the price in the US but the price for the black edition in Australia when it comes out is $489 and the silver is $379.

 

The black films in ulta high 2.7k format which can be used for TV production. The silver does not have this function. It had been said that if you are not using it as a professional device then the silver is ok for your usage.

I bought the black anyway as I just had to have the black version.

 

Question:

One of my concerns with the go pro is the sound in the water proof case refer to this video

Certainly not bagging Gopro, just a question as to sound in the waterproof case

I may have answered my own question, there is a skeleton back door to the water proof case allowing for a jack to be connected, thus making it water resistant not water proof once skeleton door is used

 

The Hero3 Black is the camera to get.

It has way better audio then the Silver and is worth the money in picture quality as well, far superior to the Silver in both the lens and the sensor.

 

That isn't a very fair comparison. GoPro recommends using the vented cover for anything under 100mph... which I think the guy was well under that limit.

 

Ithink the Wifi remote itself is 80 bucks and the black edition allows u to burst 30 pics a second i think which is pretty sweet if u are taking stills of someone in action. It also has better pic quality. I think the black is the way to go...

 

Not sure about the audio quality being any different on the 3 flavors of Hero3 (at least their website doesn't point out a difference), but the video quality is definitely a lot better. I got the black edition and the quality in 2.7k mode is amazing! Also, you can record at 1080p60 which definitely helps reduce the rolling shutter "wobble"

Some of the features that sold me on the black were the higher fps at 1080p, sharper lens and better low-light performance. The wifi remote is also very cool and comes in handy.

The black edition will get even better once the long-awaited firmware update comes out to fix some bugs and add support for their GoPro app (use your phone as a viewfinder).

 

I went ahead and bought the Black. I figured by the time I added the wifi remote then I was only $20 away from a better lens and better quality video.

That inclusion was cool Shippy. Landed a sweet deal with a small company willing to slip me 2-3 Black Editions for only $330 a piece so may be posting them on classifieds if so. Not too tech saavy with all this high end camera gear myself, but they sure do shoot sweet video!

 

Get the black. The higher quality is worth the extra hundred. I've never seen video that clear and the sound quality isn't bad either. Now if your only going to get the silver and don't care from the wifi pack then downgrade to the hero 2 and save another hundred bucks.

 

I'm having a lot of issues with my 3 black.

Freezing crashing. Won't start. Screen won't show but noises sound. Terrible battery life. 1hr:19 min compared to my 2hr:19 min from my GP 2.

Saying that I think it looks sexier and you can film 1080 at 60 fps. I'm going for 1440 at 48 tomorrow to see how that works out.

I have just manually reinstalled the firmware so I am hopeful that this will solve my issues above.
