Damn! I'm guessing the fiberglass in that spot was kind of thin and the heat made its way through the fiberglass

 

I'm guessing it was torched on the inside of the can. Sometimes the mudflap around the front sprocket will dump a load on top of the exhaust can... that has the potential to ignite but your markings are on the side. Whatever the cause, it must have been internal.

As for restoring the exterior you might try Autosol.

 

Yeah I'm guessing that you might be be to clean that up pretty good. Gonna require some time but try everything. This is how I cleaned up mine. Granted it wasn't burnt through it was dirty as hell though.

Cleaning isn't going to help an internal problem. As has been stated, looks like the inner packing was either thin in that spot or wasn't packed properly and it's super heated from exhaust gas.

 

I agree it's an internal problem. But to clean up the outside I think it will work.

My suggestion open them up and see how the packing looks. Drill out the rivit and take the ends off. If a repack is needed it's probably less then $100 for tools and supplies including beer 👍

Can anyone confirm what the mid pipe(pipe thats exposed through fairing) is made of? I was at the local parts store and they only carry autosol in either aluminum or stainless steel versions. Thanks
